Gaming News: "EA (Not) Buying Crytek"
Posted: Tuesday August 29th, 2006 by

Yesterday Gamespot reported, based purely on rumor and an EA rep saying they typically do not comment on rumors, that EA would be buying the Germany-based studio Crytek, developers of Far Cry and the upcoming Crysis. After the report was published however an EA rep had to contact Gamespot and tell them outright that the report was not true, that the comments on which the initial utterances that EA was buying Crytek were based were misinterpretted.

You know, I feel like I'm on a high horse lately about people reading comments for what they are without assigning their own meaning to the comments' intent. And this entire episode is based on Gerhard Florin, EA executive vice president and general manager of international publishing, saying that "Crytek is a very, very interesting candidate" for acquisition.

Now, when I read that statement, I don't see anything that verifies, substantiates, or in any way justifies filing a news report that EA will be acquiring the company. Apparently that doesn't need to be the case for some gaming news outlets to file the report.

I'm as guilty as any other "news outlet" of wanting to jump on breaking news items and comment on it first. But, I try my best to make sure every item I comment on has real proof. The problem, as I see it, is an over dependancy on other news sources rather than hardcore digging/fact finding yourself. (Again, guilty of it myself.)
