Woody & Ted: "Take Two of These"
Posted: Thursday May 31st, 2007 by

Google seems to be quite adept at introducing features that are simultaneously cool and kind of creep me out. Most recently they added a new feature to thier Google Maps section called "Street View". Where the satelite pictures made made me feel twitchy enough, "Street View" is actually pictures at the street level as if you're sitting in a car looking down the road. And, you can spin the "camera" 360 degrees at intersections. Where Google has not mapped many places in this fashion, a road that runs beside my house is one of the ones that have.

The images are not real time (obviously) and no, you can't really look at yourself on the computer looking at yourself on the computer, etc. But, as I said recently, exageration is part of my job.

Creepy or not I'm ridiculously impressed with the application. I just can't see how the project could ever be completely. I have to guess that the "Street View" areas will always be relatively limited. (A comment that sounds to me to be more than a little ironic.) Meaning, it will likely only exist around bigger cities and their outskirts. "Street View" areas are marked at Google Maps by camera icons.
