Gaming News: "Behind the Curtain"
Posted: Monday May 5th, 2014 by

In what I can only is assume is an attempt to get a piece of the $2 Billion Facebook pie, ZeniMax is claiming that John Carmack took intellectual property with him when he walked away from id Software (which ZeniMax owns) and used it to quickly bring the Oculus Rift up to snuff. [more info] Now, I know the comic leans in a specific direction on this, but my actual thoughts on the issue are that the situation is probably a bit more gray.

I spent a lot of time trying to put a finger on my exact position but it's so convoluted and littered with "if" that the whole thing just became a wall of text. Put simply, I think ZeniMax may have some claim depending on the contract Carmack signed with them when they bought id Software. At the same time though, it seems to me like ZeniMax is grasping at the money they otherwise let slip through their fingers when they stopped investing in VR themselves. There's more, but -meh...

There's a lot of money at stake here. Much more than just the money Oculus raised via Kickstarter and the money Facebook payed to acquire the company. The Rift is a major step forward for VR. Hopefully petty fighting over that money won't squash progress.
