An IBM commissioned study of in-game leadership has found that certain aspects of game-based leadership roles can have a direct impact on a person's ability to lead in the real world. The study was conducted over the course of eight months and used a team of six veteran gamers with more than 50,000 hours of comulative experience to observe and record the actions of leaders within an online game setting. Written by Byron Reeves, Thomas Malone, and Tony O'Driscoll, the full study can be found in the May 2008 issue of the Havard Business Review. [more info]

I sat down to the GU Live feed a couple of hours early and tasked the chatroom participants with finding a joke idea while I, selfishly, finished the first piece of non-GU-related artwork in a REALLY long time. The article above is what they, well Sanct specifically, came up with. Thanks Sanct.

Now, I've been on a couple of raids and I've heard a normally layed back guy turn into an angry raid leader when things didn't go as expected. He didn't use the kind of vulgarity you see in the comic, but the seething was almost palpable. This doesn't invalidate the study in my mind. But hopefully learning to deal with that kind of situation has a value in the real world as well.
