iPhone: "Like, For Reals"

I should preface this entire writeup with the admission that I am neither an Apple Cultist nor a Hipster. So when I see pictures of the iPhone 5, other than being slightly longer, I don't see a significant difference between it and the previous iteration. And I'm not smug enough to dismiss everything out of hand (or rock an ironic Hitler-'stache for that matter). So it absolutely confounds me when I read that "most readers [at Business Insider] think the iPhone 5 is 'ugly'". [more info]
I'm not one for smart phones. I dig the power they put at your fingertips, but I'm not a fan at all of what they do to people. That always on, always connected mindset kicks in and people disappear into their little glowing screens, thumb-typing their way in oblivion (sometimes literally). At some point I know I will have to give in, get rid of my rugged clam shell, and adopt a smart phone. But, I like to believe that it won't become the center of my universe. I can't say that for sure though. So, I just continue to avoid making the shift.
So, those of you that do use iPhones... is this thing really somehow uglier than the iPhone 4? Can you put words to your impressions for us? Because this one leaves me incredibly curious. And, it probably more than a bit unfair of me to assume it's just Hipsters being Hipsters.
