Gaming News: "Natural"
Posted: Tuesday October 16th, 2012 by

Seems layoffs hit Fable developer Lionhead Studios today. But Microsoft was quick to assure the gaming community that it wasn't an indication of bigger troubles for the studio; but rather it was just par for the course. When one game project wraps up and a new project starts, the new project needs a smaller head count at least initially. So they're cutting 10% of the staff now, but intend to hire 100 people over the course of the next year. "It's common in the game industry". [more info]

Indeed this is true. It's common in the game industry, a part of the natural cycle. But it still sucks for the people packing their belongings into boxes right now. The goal is to limit redundancy. But really, can't the development cycle and interrelation with other projects be changed in such a way that employment in the game industry isn't so volatile. I know it's a big reason why I've never hotly pursued a job in the industry. I'm not interested in moving across the country just to get canned in a year.

Careful of the lions Fable developers.

You might have noticed that there's a thread on the forums inviting you guys to take a look at an upcoming "Industrial Fantasy", browser-based MMO called City of Steam. Well, my writeups tend to get the most attention on the forums so I wanted to link you guys to it too. Give it a look. Let me know what you think.
