Diablo 3: "Whoa Whoa Whoa"

In a post on Battle.Net this morning, Mike "Soon" Morhaime, let Diablo 3 followers know that the game's release date had been pushed back from late 2011 to early 2012. Now Blizzard typically doesn't say anything more about release dates than "soon" or "when it's done". So where there's no surprise that the game is being delayed it is a surprise, to me at least, that he was willing to say "early 2012".
I'm me though, so I can't just walk away from an opportunity. The second I read it Duke Nukem Forever popped into my mind. It only felt right to run with it.
After committing to the idea and thinking about how long I've heard rumors about Diablo 3, I started digging around for a timeline. Seems the first hints that the game was being worked on was way back in 2000 almost immediately after Diablo 2 hit. Then there was the expansion. People left. Blizzard North was shut down. Original development assets were scrapped. A new team was hired. And finally in 2008 Diablo 3 was officially announced. Now a little over 3 years later, we get a "delay" announcement.
Almost Duke-ish, but not quite.
