Plants vs. Zombies: "Regarding the Hedge"

I don't get a lot of time to play games usually. But when I can grab a few minutes I switch the 360 over from Netflix (which I use to keep me company while I work) to Plants vs. Zombies on Xbox Live. As I play though the game I notice some distinct differences between the original game and the XBLA version.
Key among these differences, for me at least, is the use of a large hedge (a telephone pole on the roof stages) to hide what zombies are coming next. It's not a huge difference but from a "holy crap there are zombies trying to break into my house and eat my brains" perspective, I'd probably trim the damn bushes so I could see what was coming after me.
Now, acknowledging the fact that this is a game not the real world... the hedge, I believe, is there to help even the playing field in the versus mode which I have not played yet. So I'll leave it up to you guys to fill in the blanks on balance, fun, etc. if you wouldn't mind.
