The Life of Ted!: "Beer Wench!"
Posted: Monday November 14th, 2005 by

So, this whole Sony DRM rootkit garbage has been littering the forums for a while now, and I've had to remove certain posts because it lead to information that people could actually use to hack games, etc.

Sorry folks that lost your threads to that. I'm just being protective. Read: they can find it easily enough on their own without being directly linked to it.

Anyway, with the likelihood that class-action lawsuits are going to start popping up in every state, and more than a few different countries. I figured it would be the perfect time for Ted to get in on the game.

Now, the whole rootkit situation made me angry to be sure. But, when Thomas Hesse, President of Sony BMG's global digital business division, (depicted in the comic) said: "Most people, I think, don't even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care about it?" I dropped my head into my hands and started to fret over the direction copy protection software is headed.

Sony has dropped the DRM from any future CD's but there ARE still CDs out there with the rootkit on it. This thing is incredibly powerful, terribly coded (as is the patch that "disables" it), and can make your sytem incredibly vulnerable to certain new breeds of virus' that come looking for the DRM software on your computer. Now, keep in mind, trying to remove the DRM or using the official patch can crash your system hard, disable your CD drive, or make your anti-virus software go nuts. So, here's a link to an article that shows you what to look for so you can avoid DRM discs: http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/archives/004144.php

Anyway...
Here's to Celine Dion official GU Beer Wench.
