Gaming News: "The Divorce"
Posted: Monday July 25th, 2005 by

I stumbled across this article last night, and hopefully "Jeff" won't mind me illustrating his idea.

The article fleshes out a point I've been trying to make for years now. Any of you that have been paying attention will realize that I stopped referring to games like EQ and WoW as MMORPGs a long time ago (several years). I've been referring to them as MMOGs. The reason for this is simply, I hardly ever see any actual role playing in MMOs. And the few times I've seen it in the last few years, the person was ridiculed for "talking like that".

The basis for roleplay is there. Most of these games have a fairly rich history with plenty of room for roleplaying exploration and "character" development. But to be honest, I haven't seen large groups of people actively roleplaying in an MMO since I was level 12 in EQ on Vallon Zek. And that was a LONG time ago.

So, the idea of a massively multiplayer roleplaying game works in theory, but seems to fail miserably in practice.
