World of Warcraft: "Trap Jaw"
Posted: Monday November 1st, 2010 by

Long time forum user logicus says he's recently noticed a similarity between Deathwing and long time He-Man kick-around character Trap Jaw. Well, the jaw is similar enough to make the idea funny to me. But the idea of Deathwing identifying with Trap Jaw has some other interesting aspects to it that make the idea even better.

In the cool little mini-comic that came with the original figure, Trap Jaw was introduced into the world of He-Man accidentally by Skeletor in a return trip from the "alien dimension". He lands in Castle Grayskull and is able to harness the castle's power. It takes the combined power of He-Man and Skeletor joining their swords to defeat him. Skeletor then brings the defeated Trap Jaw back to his lair where he becomes one of Skeletor's henchmen. In the later cartoons, Trap Jaw is just another bumbling sidekick incapable of doping any real harm to the good guys.

So, with all that in mind, the comic implies that Deathwing sees himself as an underdog, once possessed of great power, now left to overcompensate for his perceived inadequacies. That compensation of course means massive destruction all across Azeroth. And it might explain the odd chin-ware.

Now back in the day when He-Man toys were still a new thing. I had a decent collection. But I never had Trap Jaw. I'm not sure why that is. But it's probably a good thing, else I might have grown up to rend the world in twain.

Thanks logicus.
