Auto Assault: "Fighting Inevitability"
Posted: Tuesday July 3rd, 2007 by

Yesterday (7/2), NCSoft announced they would be closing Nexus, the final Auto Assault server, at midnight on August 31st. Active accounts will no longer be billed, and they will be working with customers who have prepaid beyond July 31st.

This, unfortunately, is not a surprise. For all the hype leading up to Auto Assault's release, NCSoft never did do a good job promoting the game. I mean, I was following the game and didn't know when it was supposed to be released. And beyond low server population technical issues with the game, bland quests lines and basic graphics hindered the game's ability to succeed.

But, as far as I could tell, after the game's release kinda fluttered without taking off, NCSoft seemed to abandon it. Accounting for less than one-third of 1 percent of the company's sales... they let it slip inevitably toward the zapper.

For my money the game probably would have done better if they'd left characters and quests out of the mix, and just marketed the game as a run and gun, post apocalyptic, automotive free-for-all, an FPS on wheels. Let people run around and destroy stuff, advancing based on their kill counts, etc. I mean, you drove around in vehicles, weilding massive weapons, and could destroy almost anything in the environment. How could that NOT be a game that succeeded? Nothing personal NCSoft people, but I point my finger at you.
