Gaming News: "Boothbabes?"
Posted: Monday July 31st, 2006 by

News began circulating yesterday that major exhibitors had begun pulling their support of the ESA's (Electronic Software Association) yearly gaming extravaganza, E3. As the years have gone by the cost of erecting a superior booth have increased exponentially. Despite the vast majority of the cost being a direct result of their own excessive tendancies, the exhibitors are claiming that the costs no longer justify the returns. Meaning, they are not seeing enough media exposure versus their investment.

Speculation over exactly what this move has run the gamut of "E3 is cancelled" to "There will no longer be a large floor show". And some of us are just concerned about certain aspects of the event. But, like many others watching this story with bated breath, the one thing I can say comfortably is: E3 will likely never be the same.

If I had to guess, I'm inclined to subscribe the beliefs issued over at Gamespot: E3 will move to a smaller venue, become infinitely more exclusive, and will be centered around more focussed demos, conferences and the like. It's what they referred to, and I subsequently adopted, as "downsizing".

And where I'm not exactly worried about the boothbabes, I am a little upset that E3, as I knew it, is most likely gone.

The ESA is supposed to release more information about their plans later today. I will keep you guys posted.

UPDATE: [ Official Press Release ]
The ESA has confirmed that next years E3 will be a smaller "more intimate" event focussing stating, "It will focus on press events and small meetings with media, retail, development, and other key sectors. While there will be opportunities for game demonstrations, E3Expo 2007 will not feature the large trade show environment of previous years".
