Woody & Ted: "Wang Waving"
Posted: Wednesday June 7th, 2006 by

I understand it as an element of the human condition. It's the desire to relate, but subconciously seperate oneself from everyone else. Sometimes this results in boasting, sometimes it results in making one's own situation more dire, sometimes it means people feel the need to portray themselves as more macho, or more capable of dealing with pain and injury. And sometimes it leads to outright fabrication. I just call it "one up-smanship" and move on.

You notice there how I avoided using the word "lie". Well, there's a reason for that. As human beings we're given to remembering everything through the film of personal bias. Something simple, over time, becomes bloated and more complex. Our brains like to fill in details that aren't exactly accurate. But, we believe those details because they originated internally and we choose not to believe that we're capable of lying to ourselves.

Anyway, I ran head long into this brand of "one up-smanship" in yesterday's writeup thread. Taks commented simply on how I dealt with having to clean the cut that inspired yesterday's comic. And that lead to comments about what does and does not hurt, which is entirely subjective but is usually stated as fact. Well, I left it for a while since there was nothing inherently wrong with the comments. But, eventually I took it down for fear that it would snowball a la "Chuck Norris" jokes in World of Warcraft.

Well... today, I'm using the comic to encourage those statements. The more outlandish, the better. Just try not to be too graphic.

So I'll get you guys started with something akin to Taks' original statement:

Cleaning the cut hurt, not because of the peroxide, but because I had to pull the cut open and hold it open while peroxide was poured into it.
