"In-Game Advertising: 1 - Immersion: 0"

Comic Type: Anarchy Online | Posted: Friday February 25th, 2005 by Woody - [ Size: 300x465 ]
Yesterday Anarchy Online announced that they would be using Massive Inc. to put in-game advertising in front of their players. - Gamespot [ more info ]

Now, honestly I'm not opposed to in-game advertising as long at fits within the context of the game. I think it makes the games more realistic. Of course I'm desperately afraid that some companies will take it too far, put ads in the wrong kind of setting, and mess up a game's immersion value.

This whole thing is in it's infancy; so, we'll just have to wait and see. But I figured this was a good time to discuss it since Anarchy Online made headlines with it.

Now, for those of you that aren't up on all this, Massive Inc. is a new company that has raked in $10 million in venture capital to fund the development of ad insertion tools for game developers. Their idea is to dynamically offer up advertising space across their game network that targets the male 18-34 demographic. [ more info ] The result? Ads in our games.

This, for the advertisers, is an enticing morsel of possibility since TV ads are not really holding up their end of the bargain.

Now, the comic depicts a billboard with a LEET holding a pack of Mentos and, in typical LEET fashion, suggesting you "Put them in your mouth". Now, I decided to go this route because, I can't think of any current products that would make sense in the AO world. Hence the title. **shrugs**

I know we've talked about this topic on the forums here before, but, for the sake of those who only read the writeup threads (yes there's plenty) let's talk about it again here.

Remember though... constructive criticism, mature responses, and no flaming.
