At the Movies: "Aquaman"
Posted: Friday March 29th, 2019 by Woody

Yesterday we hit up our old faithful, friend in a pinch, Redbox to answer the single most pressing question of our generation: "what could we possibly do with the next couple of hours of our lives?"

We uhh... we rented Aquaman.

Now I'm not saying it's the best decision. I can think of at least a half a dozen things I'd rather be doing RIGHT NOW and I actually LIKE you guys. But, it also wasn't the worst decision. Let me elucidate.

Aquaman is the gritty, broody, dark slog the rest of the DC Movie Universe has been of late. There was an honest effort to make thing light and upbeat despite the subject matter. Some stole the James Gunn [Guardians of the Galaxy] playbook for visual design, made the whole thing a brightly colored affair. Unlike GoG, the epic battles in Aquaman could be hard to follow. There was stuff going on on-screen just to occupy space.

Where there was a concerted attempt to be light hearted, the DCMU just does have the Disney MCU writers. The dialogue was forced, the love interest felt rushed, and there was a flurry of effort to shoehorn in a much villainy as one could fit within the 2 hour 22 minute run time. All while managing to feel like there was plenty of room to leave bits and pieces on the cutting room floor, if you know what I mean.

Jason Momoa is a devilishly handsome gentleman. (Just ask Taks.) I honestly can't think of ANYONE else that could have made talking to fish and wearing that stupid yellow and green costume look cool. But, he can only make up for so much.

I wouldn't rush out to buy Aquaman; but, I certainly wouldn't discourage anyone from renting it either.
