World of Warcraft: "Motivation"
Posted: Friday September 26th, 2014 by

This is not a new or original concept. And, theBoy doesn't struggle too bad with motivation to do his chores and physical activities. He just functions better with a reminder, particularly a visual reminder. So, Taks and I talked about decided to amp up one of his favorite, if a bit rare, pastimes: playing World of Warcraft. He has a freebie account and really only gets to log in while we're entertaining the gaming nerds on Sundays. But he has to split that time up with other games he enjoys like Plants vs. Zombies, Dungeon Keeper 2, and Diablo III.

What we're doing is setting up his chores with a high gold/low experience reward. And any activities that improve him as a little boy like homework, physical activities (brain highways), etc. net high experience/low gold. Gold can used to purchase more game time, toys, and the like. Experience and leveling are arbitrary measures that we can point to as a kind of proof of his improvement/achievement. When he levels up he gets to pick an outing that typically carries a relatively high cost for the family such as Boondocks Fun Center, Water World, or bowling.

As I said though, this is no where NEAR an original concept. I read about it the first time in my EQ days and several times over the years in WoW. There's even a website for such an idea ChoreWars.Com. It's just not as robust as we'd like it. And, we're prefer the "interface" to be more physical. We'll use the thing I'm working on as a method of tracking and storing the "quests" we come up with as well as the gold and experience theBoy has earned. It's a good way to get the whole family invested in activities that will help our little guy out. So, that's a win in my book.

Woody bribes friends and family with fake gold.
