When I was young, it seemed like Ripley's Believe It or Not! museums served as the center piece of our family vacations. Now, I can't say that's actually the truth. It just seemed they were always there. Now, having children of my own, I wanted to share a bit of that experience with them. Unfortunately, there aren't any Ripley's attractions anywhere near Denver; so 'Ripley's Believe It or Not! Eye-Popping Oddities' it is. (It's a book.)
With a young reader in the house that giggles a gross-out humor, a book with nose-wrinkling pictures and short-bite stories is perfect. The layout is energetic, but is still easy to follow. And, the cover is adorned with "3D", lenticular eye-balls. So, it was a big hit. On the down side, there are a lot of believable/unbelievable stories that a rehashes or are common enough to not serve the intended purpose of the book. And, where I know it's 100% impractical, there is virtually no citation for the facts and stories in the book, excluding, of course, those highlighted stories that have photo accompaniment.
Pros:
- A wealth of entertaining vignettes
- Compelling layouts
- 250+ pages
Cons:
- A bit pricey via the Ripley's website
- A tad over-sized for small hands
Takeaway:
Though a bit expensive, it's hours of READING-based entertainment for my 8 year old.
Ripley's Believe It or Not! Eye-Popping Oddities! is available via the Ripley's website for $28.95.
