Digital Memory Scale by Smart Weigh
By Woody Hearn on Jun 30, 2015 @ 6:55AM

Earlier this year, I stepped on the cheap, little, white scale we had and harumphed at the weight displayed thereon. In an instant I decided I was done being shaped like an eggplant. But, losing weight is not something I've really, intentionally done before. I've done things that resulted in me losing weight. But it was more curiosity and experimentation than an honest effort with a governing intent. If I was going to actually "DO THIS", I was going to have to make reasoned changes, and employ a few useful tools. A few months into the process Smart Weigh offered me a Digital Memory Scale for review. The first time I stepped on it I realized that little, white scale wasn't doing me any favors.

The Digital Memory Scale has a durable, tempered glass surface, large-ish LED screen, high capacity (440 lbs.), and the ability to track up to eight users. The sleek surface looks nice, but shows dust/dirt with such proficiency that the anal retentive or compulsive types (like myself) will twitch and cringe until the scale is cleaned. Thought the Scale is capable of tracking several users, it tends to recognize each by their relative weight. I've confused it when I lost more than a pound or two in a week. If several people in your house weigh about the same, you can select your user number. Your weight is displayed initially on a blue screen. If you've lost weight, the screen will go green. If you've gained weight the screen will shift to red. It's effective, if not exactly subtle.

The Scale will also let you know if the surface you're using is not ideal, or if the scale gets shifted while its weighing you. This is all part of Smart Weigh's goal of providing one of the most accurate scales on the market. Having an incredibly dodgy scale, before the Digital Memory Scale, I can't attest to the veracity of their accuracy claims. But, the few tests I was able to do comparing weights between it and my trusted Salter kitchen scale, leads me to believe that it's as accurate as one would want it to be.

The only thing more I could ask for in a bathroom scale might be bluetooth connectivity. Allowing me to wirelessly sync data to my phone or computer is kind of "the way of things" these days. Of course this would mean also needing to provide some base level software support for those who do not already use a fitness/diet app. So it's understandable to just leave that option off entirely. Beyond that, I loathe the idea of replacing batteries. For a digital scale, with an LED screen, there really should be a wall adapter option.

Pros:
- Sleek, modern design
- Accurate
- Easy to read, LED screen
- Tracks up to 8 users

Cons:
- Glassy surface is hard to keep clean
- Battery powered
- Not Bluetooth capable

The Digital Memory Scale from Smart Weigh is available from Amazon for $39.99. (at the time of this review)
