Raya conducted a interview with me recently. If you're curious, read more below.
Though I think I come across as a bit sappy, it's still a good interview with some info you probably didn't know about me.
So, to read the 3000+ word interview: Click Here There's even some exclusive information in there about the website itself and the artistic direction of the comic. So, go give it a read and stop back by the GU forums to discuss the interview. DAoC November Winners! ( December 4th, 2005 )

Recent Guest Comics ( October 6th, 2005 )
Thanks to the guys from Comedity.com
I met Garth and Larom at ConnectiCon. And, I really dug their work on Comedity.Com. So when they mentioned being interested in doing some guest strips, I was excited by the notion. And, as hard as it is for me to give up any kind of control over the comics, I knew these guys would do justice to a guest strip spot. So, they'll be filling in for me, Friday to Tuesday, while I'm visiting my family.
Now please... help me say "thanks for filling in while Woody was gone" by heading over to their site, digging through their archives, etc. Comedity.Com September Donation Winner ( October 4th, 2005 )

Ann won the random draw to receive original Dragon sketch and color print. Thanks to everyone that donated.

![]() Halloween Costume Contest '05 ( October 3rd, 2005 )
Important Contest Rules!
The halloween costume contest has become a staple here at GU Comics. But, this last year, I received a LOT of repeat submissions from years past. And where I don't mind that too much, it kinda undercuts the spirit of the competition. SO, this year we're changing the format a bit. This year the entries have to be GU related.
To explain: This year, I want you to pick a comic from the archives and reproduce one of the characters in it. It can be anything or anyone. But, remember, when you email me your submission, include a link to the comic you used as inspiration! Once again the Grand Prize is an appearance in the comic, original artwork, GU goodies, and any other cool things I muster up. Contestants have until Sunday November 6th to get their entries in. So, get in gear (literally) and send your submissions to: Halloween05@GUComics.Com Please make sure to let me know if you would prefer me not to post your costume image after the contest is finished. And, don't forget to include a link to the comic you used as inspiration! Good Luck and Have Fun! No more donation giveaways... ( October 1st, 2005 )
So says PayPal!
I've been a loyal PayPal user for years now. I've gone to bat for them when they did stupid stuff to other people. But, I guess, now it's my turn.
A few days ago I received the email below: Sent: Saturday, September 24, 2005 10:51

I guess it doesn't matter. I'm looking for other options anyway. GU @ BlizzCon ( September 9th, 2005 )
Anaheim here I come!
The folks at Blizzard have invited me out to BlizzCon and I'm pretty durned excite about it. I'll be posting more information as it's given to me, but I can tell you I'll be doing a panel with the guys from Penny Arcade to talk about our experiences in the game. (That should be on Friday.) So, if you haven't purchased your tickets already, head over to the BlizzCon website do so now! http://www.blizzcon.com/ I look forward to seeing you guys there. I'll be the guy in the orange hat. **coughs** August Donation Winner ( September 8th, 2005 )
Congratulations Robert H.
Robert won the random draw to receive original Vhah sketch and color print. I'd just like to thank everyone that donated for a chance to win. And don't forget, this month is going to be a nifty dragon sketch... I think you guys'll like it.
Again, congratulations Robert. The Spoils: ![]() ![]() GU + DAoC = Vegas ( August 30th, 2005 )
Las Vegas Roundtable!
September 23rd and 24th, I'll be a guest of Mythic Entertainment at their Las Vegas Roundtable.
I know it's short notice, but if you can make it out to meet the folks from Mythic and myself that'd be great. Tickets are still available. The first 300 registrants get a free copy of DAoC's upcoming expansion "Darkness Rising". A partial apology to IGE ( August 12th, 2005 )
I haven't been exactly fair.
I'll admit right off the bat here that I have a tremendous bias against IGE. And where I'm likely never going to be accepting of their place in our community, I have to admit to having been a tad unfair.
In the last few years, I've been given information about IGE, and it's upper echelon employees, from some sources I trust implicitly (and a couple of sources I trust just a little less). But, that information lead me to intesify my absolute dislike of IGE. And, given information I've been given recently from another source I trust, I've decided that I've been unfair and should apologize for some of the beliefs I've held without absolute proof. So, I apologize for accepting certain information without doing some hard core research on my own. I still don't really like you guys... but that doesn't mean I'm too big to apologize for the things I got wrong. Donation Winners ( August 9th, 2005 )
Wacom Tablet and a 6 foot Comic
I ran the Wacom Tablet giveaway through June and July while I was busy with ConnectiCon stuff. And, I just wanted to congratulate Donald N. on his new Wacom Graphire 3.
And while I'm at it, I got a picture back from the April Winner, Kristopher M., who's standing beside his 6 foot tall Ding! Panel. ![]() Thanks for the donations and congratulations to you both! GU Survey almost complete ( August 8th, 2005 )
Only a few more days left.
With well over 7 thousand viable records the GU Survey is nearing it's end.
I would like to take this time to thank all of you that have participated. The survey will be closed after the 15th of August, and the data will be crunched. The Split Reason winners will be drawn. And, the data that is deemed accetable for release will be posted. So, if you haven't already, and you can spare the time... Please take the GU Survey! [ sponsored by Split Reason ] Thanks! August Donation Drive! ( August 8th, 2005 )
Win an Original Vhah Sketch!
I've been studying the work of Ben Caldwell to improve the comic's style. This is the first sketch I did of Vhah in the new style. The pose is completely ripped off from Mr. Caldwell, but the final image is Vhah, none the less.
So, we'll set the donation percent at $300, but someone will get the original artwork whether the donation goal hits 100% or not. I hope you guys like it. It's the constant refinement of the comic. One day it'll be just right... one day. The winner will receive a full color print of the image as well, colored like the Adventures of Vhah comic. ![]() Exclusive Screenshots ( July 28th, 2005 )
A look at Vanguard: Beta!
Late last night I got a message from Brad over at Sigil asking if I'd like to share some exclusive Vanguard: Beta 0/Friends & Family screenshots with the GU readers. My reply was a resounding "yes". So, below you'll find eleven "exclusive" gameplay shots.

ConnectiCon Officially Saved!
Early yesterday morning (7/28) the thirty-four thousand dollar goal to Save ConnectiCon was reached. Now, this doesn't garauntee a ConnectiCon next year. There are a lot of factors that will play into that. But, it DOES go a long way to ensure ConnectiCon's continued existance.
I'd just like to express my gratitude to everyone of the GU readers who helped. Thanks guys! Help Save Connecticon! ( July 21st, 2005 )
A GU Call to Arms!
UPDATE (July 22nd, 2005 12:31am):
10 GU wallpapers have been added to the SaveConnectiCon Donator's Area. And all it'll cost you is one $5 donation to access ALL Donator Area goodies! ConnectiCon is, in my opinion, the single greatest convention for webcomics ever created. BUT, without your help there may not be another! PLEASE read the following information and help if you can! ---------- Taken from SaveConnectiCon.Com In 2003, ConnectiCon opened its doors for the first time. Run by Matt Daigle and Briana Benn at the University of Hartford in Connecticut, ConnectiCon was a labor of love. Through blood, sweat and tears (and their own finances), they created one of the friendliest, most welcoming conventions in the Northeast. It caters to Anime, Sci-Fi, Gaming, Fantasy and more. They ended their first year in debt, not entirely unusual for a first time convention. Yet despite their own financial losses, in 2004 they hosted ConnectiCon for a second time. The convention doubled in every aspect: attendance, guest appearances, and in fun. They finally broke even. Due to a change in management and policy at the University of Hartford, where ConnectiCon was hosted for the first two years, the convention was forced to find a new home in 2005. Faced with a choice of canceling their event or taking a risk on a more expensive venue, Matt and Briana put everything they had on the line to throw the best convention they could. They moved ConnectiCon to the brand new Connecticut Convention Center. Despite throwing another wonderful convention this year, they did not break even. In fact, due to the Convention Center being so new, and through a series of misunderstandings between ConnectiCon and Connecticut Convention Center staff, there were a lot of unforeseen expenses tacked on at the last minute. To outline the costs concisely: The space rental was $45,000. The billing for additional expenses (to be attached at the convention's end) was quoted as being $5,000-$10,000. These expenses were planned for. However this bill was inflated due to last minute additions to Connecticut Convention Center staff, such as a full-time Fire Marshal, a full-time nurse, and extra security personnel, which were not discussed in the initial contract negotiations. Over the course of the weekend these additional expenses continued to pile up, until costs far exceeded the original $10,000 estimate. As a result, Matt Daigle is now $34,148.50 in debt. That is too much for any one person to shoulder, let alone a person who was never interested in making money, and just wanted to throw a fun event for people to enjoy. At this point it's not only ConnectiCon 2006 that's in danger; it's Matt and Briana's future. ConnectiCon has earned a reputation amongst the webcomic community as being the largest supporter of our medium. There has never been another convention that treated webcomics with such respect and admiration. There has never been a convention that showcased such a huge number of webcomics in one place. They have treated webcomics like royalty for the past three years and now, in their hour of need, dozens of webcomic creators and other artists have banded together to organize this fund. We need to save our friends. We need to save our ConnectiCon. And we need your help to do it." Taken from SaveConnectiCon.Com ---------- On a personal note: Matt and Briana are two of the nicest people you'll ever meet, and every time I go to ConnectiCon they make me feel like a rock star. I would be heartbroken if this was the final ConnectiCon. So,PLEASE... help in any way you can. Keep watching SaveConnectiCon.Com for exclusive GU artwork in the "donators only section" and the eBay Auctions. Please take the GU Survey! ( July 11th, 2005 )
GU needs your help with a simple survey!
It's been 5 years now and I think it's about time for me to take a look at my readership. So, I'm running a survey and I'd really appreciate it if you took a few moments to fill it out an submit it. It shouldn't take any more than 10 to 15 minutes. Now, the goal is take a closer look at the demographics, motivations, interests, etc of the GU readership. This is will help me refine what games I do comics about, what news I should try to cover, and what advertisers might appeal to you guys, so the ads on the site don't annoy you too much. The survey will be running for a month or so and is being sponsored by our friends over at Split Reason. Each person that enters will be eligible to win one of three prizes: 1st Prize: $100 Split Reason Gift Certificate. 2nd Prize: $50 Split Reason Gift Certificate. 3rd Prize: $25 Split Reason Gift Certificate. Measures have been taken to try to ensure that we only receive one entry per person without limiting families to one entry per household. For the sake of accurate data collection, we ask that each person PLEASE only take the survey once. Please take the GU Survey! [ sponsored by Split Reason ] Personal information will not be used for any purpose other than ensuring the accuracy of collected data. The email address will be used to contact winners of the three prizes. Winners will be selected randomly from the survey participant list. 5 Years 1000 Panels ( July 10th, 2005 )
GU turns 5 and reaches the 1000 "comic" mark.
5 years ago today, I decided to draw a picture illustrating a conversation I had in guild chat. I was entirely too high level to still be crawling around BlackBurrow, but I was down there, handing weapons to Gnolls, for the express purpose of disarming them and raising my disarm skill.
A week or two later, an EQ Community News site, picked up GU, posted about it in a brief write-up. 5 years later the comic has shifted from being a hobby to a full time job. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has dropped by over the years to make GU what it is. I really appreciate your support! GU @ ConnectiCon ( June 24th, 2005 )
I'm headed to Hartford Connecticut. July 15-17. Come out and say Hi.
Running July 15-17 at the Connecticut Convention Center, ConnectiCon is the largest multi-genre convention in New England.
Playing host to anime, gaming, science-fiction, fantasy, video screenings, informative panels, workshops, demonstrations, hollywood talent, anime voice actors, game designers, TONS OF WEB CARTOONISTS and more... ConnectiCon, quite literally, has something for everyone. And, somewhere in that mix is me. I'll be in attendance, trying not to be a fanboi myself. I'm completely unsure of my schedule, but there should be plenty of scheduled opportunities for folks to meet me. So, come on out, I'll see you there! ConnectiCon Registration MacHall Miscalculation ( June 12th, 2005 )
GU only has 10K unique readers?
UPDATE: Thanks Matt for getting the numbers fixed for me.
____________________ I don't fault Matt from MacHall for his miscalculation of GU's traffic, but I do wish he'd asked me about my stats before telling their readers GU only had 10 thousand readers. In actuality GU has something on the order of 135 thousand readers. I had more than 10 thousand readers the first day the comic was rleased to the public. In the writeup he's discussing a webcomic spat between a couple of the giants, but comments on GU referring to it as a small comic based on a conversation we had two years ago. And, where I do indeed consider GU a small comic site relative to sites like Penny Arcade and PVP, it's not as small as Matt believes it to be. As a matter of fact, if Alexa is to be trusted, GU is about the same size (calculated reach) as MacHall. I just wanted to set the record straight for those that came to visit GU via the link at MacHall. P.S. Please use the link above to visit MacHall, the artwork is awesome. A Week in Vegas ( June 8th, 2005 )
SOE Fan Faire and more "Sketch" Comics
I'll be in Vegas from Wednesday, June 8th, to Monday, June 13th, covering the EQ Community Summit and the SOE Fan Faire.
I'll need to post "sketch" comics until I get home to my stylus. Regular comics SHOULD return Tuesday, but I get in Monday night, so Tuesday MAY be a "sketch" comic as well. We'll just have to wait and see. Late Comic! (5/27) ( May 27th, 2005 )
Connectivity Issues!
It's taken me over three hours to get this message through. So, there's no way I can get the comic through.
I'll be contacting my provider first thing in the morning to see what the issue is. This is the second night in a row that I've struggled with connectivity. Please be patient. I'll have the comic up as soon as possible. E3 2005 Vanguard Demo ( May 26th, 2005 )
More information on Sigil's upcoming masterpiece.
The Sigil portion of Microsoft's "Games for Windows" booth was among my first destinations at this year's E3. I had an appointment to see what was new with Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.
Without further ado here's information from the E3 2005 Vanguard Private Demo. When you've finished reading the article, please feel frre to use the link at the end of the write-up to visit the forums and discuss. E3 Moblog ( May 19th, 2005 )
Pictures from E3
Check out photos shot from my cellphone as I meander through the convention halls:
"http://www.flickr.com/photos/gucomics/" target=_blank" alt="GUComics E3 moblog">http://www.flickr.com/photos/gucomics/. Also uploaded with photos taken with a digital camera each night post-convention. GU at E3 ( May 16th, 2005 )
And what that means for the comic!
I'll be attending my first E3 this year. I'll be gone from Tuesday to Saturday. So, most of the comics this week are going to be sketches from the convention rather than the full color images you're used to.
Sorry about that. I just can't lug all the necessary supplies (pens, stylus, scanner, etc) to LA with me. Hopefully all the news I bring back will make up for that! The comic should be back to normal, next monday. Buy GU Panels! ( May 8th, 2005 )
Original GU Panels Available for Purchase Again!
It's that time again! Original GU panels are available for purchase once more. It's a yearly event here that attempts to lighten the ever growing stack of comics.
Now, not every panel is available, as some have been sold, given away, or are reserved for commercial purposes. So, please list optional panels as well. And, as always, they'll be sold on a "first come first served" basis. If you're interested, email your requests to panels@gucomics.com. Cost will vary depending on the complexity of the panels you request. Base price for each panel will be $50. Please keep in mind that the original panels are not colored, and do not have any text on them. So, help me thin the stack out! I'm running out of space and they need a nice new home. April Donation Drive Winner ( May 6th, 2005 )
Congratulations Kristopher M.
The April donation drive exceeded 100%, so each contributor got one chance to win per dollar they donated.
The reward for hitting 100% was intially listed as an 8 foot tall Ding! panel. But, do to printing resolution issues it had to be bumped down to 6 feet. It's okay, Kristopher didn't mind, he said the 6 foot one would fit better anyway. **grins** Congratulations Kristopher. And thank you all for your kind donations! May Donation Drive ( May 2nd, 2005 )
Win a Life Size Ted stand-up!
You guys seem to enjoy Ted, so I figure why not make him more "available" to you. So, if 100% ($500) or more is reached during the May donation drive, each $1 donation will equal one chance to win a Life Sized Ted stand-up.
Needless to say, I'm pretty excited about being able to offer this to you guys. So, donate if you can. Your gifts are always appreciated. New GU Shirt ( May 1st, 2005 )

Interview with Brad McQuaid ( April 27th, 2005 )
Chat transcipt regarding "virtual merchants".
I asked last week if I could get an interview with Brad McQuaid (President & CEO of Sigil Games, producers of the upcoming MMOG "Vanguard: Saga of Heroes") concerning the movement of virtual property, and how Sigil intends to deal with it. This Tuesday our schedules finally matched up well enough for us to get a good hour long chat going.
Virtual Merchant Interview with Brad McQuaid After reading the interview, feel free to drop by the associated forum thread to discuss the interview and ask questions. Brad will be doing his best to stop by and continue the conversation in the GU forums. Sales Manager Selected ( April 18th, 2005 )
Please help me welcome Michael!
I got a suprising number of really good resumes/coverletters. And a handful of sterling examples really stood out. Those sterling examples provided me with further information about their ideas for GU.
After a lot of reading, a good deal of debate and consideration, I chose the applicant that seemed to most closely embody my idea of the perfect sales manager for GU Comics. Michael was that person. Michael has a wealth of experience in almost every area GU needs help with. He's got a sharp brain, and motivation enough for the both of us. I think this is going be a great business relationship. And, I can't wait for you guys to start benefitting from Michael's productivity. Because the better he does the more money I will be able to turn back into the comic, the more features I'll be able to add to the site, and the more ideas I'll be able to bring to fruition to make GU a better place to spend your time. Welcome to the fold Michael! That's it! It's done! ( April 10th, 2005 )
More Archive Changes
I dropped the slash from the name of the comic well over two years ago, and I've finally gone back and editted the hundreds of comics with the old logo so that they all have the new logo. It took me days. But, it's done.
The next step is to modify the t-shirts for the store. I will be getting that done as soon as possible. After that, there shouldn't be anyting left, graphically, to cause confusion. March Donation Drive Winner ( April 8th, 2005 )
Congratulations Gabrielle S.
The March donation drive exceeded 100%, so each contributor got one chance to win per dollar they donated.
The reward for hitting 100% was one of the following: Western Digital Raptor 10K RPM 74Gig SATA Harddrive, Western Digital 7.2K RPM 300Gig IDE Harddrive, or a $180 NewEgg Gift Certificate. Gabrielle went with the $180 NewEgg Gift Certificate. Congratulations Gabrielle. April Donation Drive ( April 1st, 2005 )
Win an 8 foot tall Ding! Panel!
Ding! is one of GU's most popular comics ever. So, for this months donation drive, if 100% is reached, everyone that donates will get one chance per dollar they donate to win an 8 foot tall, vinyl Ding! panel.
Now originally I wanted to give away a 10 foot tall panel. But, I figured some folks will have 8 foot ceilings, so it would be best if I made sure the comic would fit. I just wish I could donate for this one myself. Ask Ted: episode 4 ( April 1st, 2005 )
Ask Ted: episode 4 now available
Ask Ted: episode 4 "This one's for the LADIES!" is now available.
If you have a question you'd like to ask Ted just send them to ted@gucomics.com. Don't forget to include your name, city and state. Want a Job at GU? ( March 22nd, 2005 )
GU Comics is looking for an experienced Sales Manager.
GU has grown beyond my business ability, and I need a knowledgable, business minded sales person to acquire GU advertising and promote growth. But, I'll be honest with you, this position can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be. You could make it a full time job or do it as a part time side project.
I'm not looking for just anyone that "thinks they can do it" though. It's not a requirement, but I'm looking for someone with industry contacts and a proven cold call strategy. Pay will be based on performance. A dedicated individual could turn this "side project" into a career. Applicants please email a resume and cover letter to jobs@gucomics.com. Model your GU gear! ( March 10th, 2005 )
I'm looking to post "customer shots" in the GU store.
I'm going to be expanding the GU store a bit, and I'd like to get some "customer action shots" ala ThinkGeek and SplitReason to post in the store so folks can see what they're in for.
So, if you've bought (or won) GU goodies, feel free to send me a picture or two ( ), and as long as they're Safe For Work and a reasonable enough quality so that the gear can actually be SEEN, I'll post em.Thanks to any and all who contribute! GU RSS Feed ( March 10th, 2005 )
I finally caved in a coded one.
I wasn't happy with the notion of handcoding an RSS feed, and the idea of using code to touch a text file makes me feel icky inside. So, I did some research, and have managed to create a dynamic .xml file that automatically updates when I add a comic or news.
The syndication address is: http://www.gucomics.com/rss.xml So please stop emailing me asking me to create one. Win a Nintendo DS! ( March 9th, 2005 )

From GU out to the rest of the interweb!
Some of you may not have noticed, but over ther on the left is a little text line called "Other Links". This line is just as it implies, it is a concentrated page of links to some of my favorite spots on the net.
So, I encourage you, use that to move around and visit new (or old) places. And more get added as they find their way into my routine. Just thought I'd let you know! GU Archive Changes ( February 13th, 2005 )
Trust me, it needed it.
The old code (I didn't write it) was slowly becoming completely useless under the weight of nearly 900 comics.
So, I made some changes. Now it doesn't read every file in folder any more. You can see where that would have become more and more of a problem as more and more comics were added. Now the archives are fed off of the database I put behind them a few months ago. They're broken up into their respective years. Though, if you want to, you can still look at a list of all of them at once. Ask Ted: episode 2 ( February 5th, 2005 )
Ask Ted: episode 2 is now available!
Since Episode 1 was nearly a month late (while I was waiting on the new t-shirts to be ready), I've gone ahead and posted

So very very late. **sighs**
Well, I finally got the Ninja image done. I'm not really happy with it, it just doesn't have enough detail. But, I'll work on it. See what's what. Maybe upload a new version before the month is out.
Sorry about the wait. |
