Gaming News: "Makes Perfect"
Posted: Wednesday March 20th, 2013 by

Most of the time I read gaming news and shrug it off. But every once in a while something gets reported that sends me into a sputtering rage. Today it was Richard 'Lord British' Garriott telling PC Gamer "I've met virtually no one in our industry who I think is close to as good a game designer as I am", "most game designers really just suck", "Every designer that I work with - all throughout life - I think, frankly, is lazy", "lack ambition", and that they "get that job because they're not qualified for the other jobs". [more info] Really? What a douchebag set of comments.

Richard Garriott is famous for a few things: going to space, buying a lunar rover, having a pompous house, and milking Ultima dry. I've heard a LOT of things about Garriott in GU's 13 years and not a single one of them had to do with how great a designer he is. But even if he was the sun's-shining-grace of game design, does he really have tickle his own scrotum while disparaging all other game designers? Wait... he did manage to to stop staring in the mirror at himself long enough to give a nod to Chris Roberts (Wing Commander), Wil Wright (Sims), and Peter Molyneux (Fable). But Mr. Tabula Rasa really needs to step back an look at his body of work. I don't feel he has any right to put himself out there as the top of the list.

I don't typically wish failure upon a person or project, but his successfully Kickstarted "Lord British' Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues" can burn in a fire. I doubt anyone will pay any attention to me but if I'd pledged any money to SotA, I'd pull it right now and give it to an in-the-garage indie developer who is bashing their head on the concrete to get their game noticed.

Now if you'll excuse me for a few minutes, I need to go outside and cool off.

So that you know, the Archive Search feature is back. I was trying to find a better method, but this one will have to do for now. Here's the link:
