In a recent interview with Eurogamer John Hemingway, the lead designer on Border lands 2, talked about how they were introducing "for lack of a better term" a "girlfriend skill tree" to the game that would basically allow someone that sucks at first person shooters to understand and play the game. As you can imagine, there has been some backlash over his word choice. Sure he pre-empted the comment with "for the lack of a better term", but hey here's a crazy idea... how about not say "girlfriend" at all in that instance. He could have just as easily said a "noob" skill tree and the backlash would have been from noobs about being called noobs rather than being sexist.
There has been a LOT of talk of sexism in the game industry lately. It has covered the workplace and game environment. Employers, designers, and gamers themselves. There have even been threats of violence to females who tried to initiate the discussion which is a real shame because this is a discussion the gaming community sorely needs to have.
Note: Borderlands 2 will be available on US store shelves September 18th.
I'm going to be starting up the Artist For Sale listing tomorrow and this time around I will be taking commissions, and introducing the new $50 commission level. So if you've been thinking of getting something get your wallet ready.
