Gaming News: "The Oculus Rift"
Posted: Wednesday August 1st, 2012 by

John Carmack is a gaming legend. So when he, alongside Valve, start showing off a rough virtual reality prototype headset, people take notice. And when they endorse a Kickstarter project to fund it, people take notice and begin flinging money at them.

The Oculus Rift: Step Into the Game Kickstarter project was posted at noon with a $250,000 pledge goal. By the time of this writing (a mere 7 hours later) the project was already at $600,000 with 30 days left to go.

I've seen a lot of Kickstarter projects take off and fund in no time, but I've not seen anything like this before. I get the feeling this one is going to easily dethrone Double Fine's $3million+ pledge total in the game space. And I wonder if if has the legs to catch the Pebble's $10million+. Guess we'll know this time next month.

(Note: the Ouya isn't currently listed as it does not fund for another week. That being said, it is already over $6million, well past it's initial $950K goal.)

Edit: Both the comic and this writeup have been edited to correct my misunderstanding of Carmack's role in the Rift's development.
