Gaming News: "$13,000 NES"
Posted: Monday February 15th, 2010 by

News came to me last night of a NES that sold for over $13,000 on eBay. [more info] Included in the lot was the NES, 1 controller, Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt, Super Mario 3 (in original box), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: the Arcade Game (in original box), Major League Baseball (in original box), and Family & Fitness Stadium Events (in original box). It wasn't the NES or even the games that made the bids spiral upward that far. Rather it was the box for booklet for Family & Fitness Stadium Events.

So what makes the game box worth so much? Well, "Family & Fitness" was the precursor to the Power Pad. So every game and peripheral marked "Family & Fitness" was ordered to removed from the shelves and destroyed so that the rebranded Power Pad items could take their place. It is believe that only 10 copies of the "Family & Fitness" branded Stadium Events titles survived intact. And of those 10 only once is still factory sealed. So yeah, it's an incredibly rare item.

The question remains though: why, even with its rarity, is the game "worth" so much? The answer apparently lays in the realm of collector frenzy. There are people out there who endeavor to own the entire NES library. Now, if it's true that only 10 intact copies remain, I have to wonder how so many of them are on eBay.

So here's a question, is there any game out there you'd pay that much for?
