Gaming News: "82 Percent"
Posted: Friday December 4th, 2009 by

I stumbled across an article last night that lead with the following sentence, "About 82 percent of kids from ages 2 to 17 say they’re video gamers, according to a survey by market researcher NPD Group". The survey went on to say "55.7 million kids are playing games, including 9.7 million who are ages 2 to 5". [more info]

See I have a two year old. And where I don't doubt his ability to play a simple video game with a simple video game controller. He's just interested in other things. And even if he wasn't, how the hell would you conduct a survey with him? Yeah sure I know NPD wasn't wandering around asking 2 year olds questions I barely understand myself. But the idea still amuses me.

Now, I'm sure the parents in the crowd know exactly what little Timmy just said. But for the "uninitiated", let me translate.

Little Timmy started off his response by singing what he knows of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". The repetition in the song lead him to start counting. Then he remembered that he would like to watch a movie; but, the monsters from Monsters Inc. are sleeping so he's letting the reporter know that he would like to watch Ice Age III instead. And being the kind host he let's the reporter know that Dinosaurs roar; let's him know what that might sound like; and then informs the reporter that he'll go retrieve the remote (gotta get 'em) to set the whole plan in motion. If this was a video, the second "gellum" escaped his lips little Timmy would have run out of the room as quickly as he could, flailing his arms above his head. This would be followed by a loud "whump", the phrase "I fall down", a giggle, and the sound of the TV turning on.

It's pure stream of consciousness; and, it makes me laugh several times per day. Being there to witness the development of language firsthand is awesome. Of course getting theKid to try to say certain difficult words is a good way to pass time too.

Unrelated notes...
I've moved GU's subscription service from Assetbar to here on the forums. This will give me better control over the bonus content. A much better cut of the subscription cost. And it gives subscribers more control over their forum account, access to the bonus content, and a private place where they can make requests/suggestions for more bonus content.

GU Subscription rates are currently $3 per month, $7.50 per quarter, or $24 per year.
[If you were a recurring subscriber to the GU Fanflow please go read the most recent message in the fanflow. And don't give Assetbar any more of your money.]
