Last week Variety put to rest several years of fan conjecture and released information that a new Street Fighter game to movie adaptation was in the works. Initial reports have the story centering around Chun Li. Story and cast details have yet to be released. Yesterday, Variety announced that a director had been named: Andrzej Bartkowiak, director of the film translation of Doom.

I won't blast the original Street Fighter movie or Bartkowiak's DOOM just incase any of you enjoyed them. But for all intents and purposes, both movies were bashed soundly by the gaming populace. DOOM in particular suffered fan vitriol for cutting a 90 degree depature from the game's story line. The blame for this was placed directly on Andrzej. That in mind, fears have begun to surface that a similar plight will befall the new Street Fighter film.
I'll be honest here, I'm waiting patiently for that one director that takes a video game and turns it into movie gold. Surely someone somewhere has the skill and game fandom to do a title justice. I just wish we could revoke some directors' rights to work on a game to film translation.
"Whoops! Bad game-based film. Sorry you're stuck doing romatic comedies from now own."
