Everquest: "Been There Done That"
Posted: Thursday January 18th, 2007 by

I've decided, in my own little jackassed fashion, to comment on the newest EverQuest expansion, "The Buried Sea" in the only manner I know how: head-slapping disbelief illustrated through pointed repetition.

I know the EQ devs work hard. And if they're reading this, I just want them to know that I don't blame them for the development cycle in the least.

It doesn't seem like that long ago since I last played EQ, but even then I felt ridiculously lost in the "feature" overload that EQ has become. Since then there have been three new expansions with one more due next month. I realize that new users would likely come into the game with a clean slate, not realizing how simple it all used to be. But, I can't imagine how they could not feel just as overwhelmed, and I, at least, have a grasp on the most basic game mechanics.

The February/September release schedule has been in place since 2003, so it's certainly nothing new. But, it seems that even with the player open revolt to the expansion timelines nothing has really changed. We're at the point now where EQ is just dumping in whatever new idea other MMOGs are making into an entire game. It should appear somewhat obvious that 2 expansions a year is just... too much. I believe now as I believed at the time of the boycott: we don't need more than one expansion per year.

I realize that high end guilds rip through the content and are ready to move on. But more content is being added in at the expense of the casual gamer. Sure we can try to ignore the new features and play the game as we did before the glut of expansions. But the truth is, if you don't learn the new stuff, your chances of getting a group are slim to none.

I guess the whole point here is that I feel sad. My Everquest is gone. Even when my interest to go back returns, I can't. In the time it would take me to learn everything I missed, another expansion would casting a shadow over my character, leaving a sort of dread in it's wake.

So, what does all this mean? Same ol' same ol'. Since February of 2003 at least.

Note: Please don't bash EQ here. It's bad enough that I've issued such a bloated recounting of my own displeasure. But, it's kinda my job.
