Gaming News: "BitchPlease"
Posted: Friday June 30th, 2006 by

In a recent interview with PlayStation Magazine, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), Kaz Hirai, decried Microsoft's console direction as being little more than follow the leader saying, "Every time we go down a path, we look behind and they're right there - we just can't shake these guys."

Now, I can only imagine that Mr. Hirai is referring the Microsoft's HD DVD add-on as being some kind of ripoff of their own plans to have blu-ray players in the PS3. In all the mud slinging these guys have been doing lately, this has to be one of the most ridiculous statements I've seen. So, I call BitchPlease.

I don't mean to be snotty here and I'm definately NOT a MS fanboy. But, I just feel I have to point out the following:
· The PS3 will have a hard drive. The Xbox included a hard drive 5 years ago.
· Sony is releasing an online service that lets gamer play together. XBox Live was released 4 years ago.
· The PS3 will sell at different prices based on different system configurations. The 360 did that last year.
(Lifted from a comment at Kotaku.)

I know I'm probably missing some stuff. But, it all boils down to "the nature of business". Accusing Microsoft of lifting nearly every element of their business strategy from other companies is beyond ludicrous. The PS3 will be a success if the execs at Sony would just make their damn product and shut the hell up. Them shoving their foot in their collective mouths is hindering their chances of success not helping.

I realize some of you folks are going to disagree and that's fine. But, please atleast be constructive and don't assume that I'm bashing Sony for any reason other than Kaz Hirai being out of line here. I think Sony might be feeling the effects of gamer backlash right now, so they're trying to shift the negative focus to their competitor. These most recent comments actually seem to be having the opposite effect.
