I was reading Jerry's (Tycho's) writeup at Penny Arcade yesterday (4/1) and was mildly shocked to see that Mike (Gabe) hates political cartoons.
[more info] Now, if you've ever really paid attention to my post comic commentary, you already know that I see myself as somewhat of a gaming political cartoonist. I don't use a lot of symbolism or visual metaphors but I use my comics to poke at the very industry that supports me. And, early in my college career I considered giving political cartooning a go. I even went so far as to produce some political cartoons for the college newspaper.
Now, I don't believe Mike actually hates me. I doubt he even considers GU to be relative to the political cartooning genre. And, I can't really say I disagree with the sentiment. Most political cartoons I see these days make my eyes roll as I tip toe through the obvious bias and try desperately to wrap my brain around exactly where the cartoonist is coming from.
I can't remember the names of the political cartoonists I grew up reading, and maybe time has clouded my memory, but I don't remember them being as ridiculous as the ones these days. At least they didn't stir up bile and contempt. **shrugs**
In the end I nod appreciatively at Honoré Daumier's
Gargantua and hope Gabe realizes we're not all bad.
